Screenwiter's note
When I was twenty-two, I took care of my mom during her six-month chemotherapy treatment. I spent a lot of time with her at the hospital. There was plenty of laughter, and plenty of silent pain. Every three weeks, we’d return to the same ward and see the same women. They were all so different, yet something connected them — not just cancer, but the everyday moments they shared in that room. Someone wanted to open a window to air out the smell of sausage – some- one else was terrified of a draught. One needed a nap, while another insisted on holding a gong session. Someone was surrounded by visiting family, while someone else was missing theirs.
I was surprised how much of life we can find in the room and how much existence lies in everyday’s details, while sharing it in one space with five different characters you would never meet otherwise. Back then, I told my mom I would write a play about it. She said to focus on life in the ward, not the illness. My mom didn’t make it, but her story did. And now, it continues its journey — this time, as a TV series.
Women “Therapies” are chaotic, unpredictable, and bursting with life. They are real and reconisable.
They eat, sleep, fight, laugh, break down, and move on – together. They try to accepttheir changing bodies, they try to hide the fear, sometimes they are fighters and sometimes they are a mess – like all of us. They are scared they might not gonna make it, but aren’t we all? Let’s have some laughter together with them.
