Stan (40 y.o.) is a refugee and his citizenship has been taken away. He tries to keep on living as a refugee, but this turns out to be impossible without having any documents. In a refugee prison he becomes close with Starly (24 y.o.), Ahmed (32 y.o.) and Option (45 y.o.) and together they decide to establish their own country on an abandoned platform in the sea. There they find out that Joanna (34 y.o.) lives there. The four of them decide to divide the platform and to establish the most democratic country, living next to “the locals”, who does not agree neither with their decision, nor with their actions. Hunted down by their different pasts, their believes for freedom and democracy start to flow on the surface. In his willingness to save the democracy, Stan totally kills it by becoming a dictator of the whole state. In front of the 5 citizens of the newly established state raises the dilemma to destroy themselves or to destroy the platform.
Director's note:
This is a film about freedom. About how, in the desire to preserve freedom, we can destroy it.
Stan was expelled from his own dictatorial state and embittered by a lack of tolerance for a refugee like him. He decided, along with three other refugees, to establish a new democracy on an abandoned platform at the sea. But he does not like democracy when it does not follow his ideas and rules. Thus, in his desire to fight for the freedom of the platform, he becomes a dictator who kills democracy. The moment you put yourself above the others, you are already an aggressor.
The platform is an anti utopia with clear signs and metaphors of the modern world. The Platform is a scaled-down model of those people’s desires. The conflicts and the very absurdity of the situation transform this drama into a black comedy (dramedy). The genre is determined by our desire to make a psychological movie and not a political thriller.
