Call Me Calendar
Branded as freak, Oscar leads an impoverished life with his ailing mother. When he sees the Beautiful Girl, love puts him on the path of self realisation. Gathering together the town's old and lonely, he decides to do the saddest theatre in the world.
Oscar, a positive 30-year-old, falls hopelessly in love with the girl of his dreams and takes the first steps towards independence from his mother. To prove his worth, Oscar recruits a motley crew of companions who, despite their age, have never lost their sense of childhood. Together, they create a heartbreaking, tragicomic chain of events to prove that escape from loneliness is possible if you act from the heart.
Keywords: self-realisation, literature
Director's note:
Wanderers are those who deviate from the norm. They opt out of the socially accepted way of life to choose a different path. They do so in order to better determine what they want out of life, where they could best serve, or even just to search for a while. The wandering Oscar approaches the world with sincerity and directness, having a very distinctive voice. It is the immediacy with which one discovers this world for the first time, as a child or an alien from another planet. Baumgartner's fall from the stratosphere thus works as a visual metaphor – his dream or perhaps a role model that he often recalls. Like Forrest Gump or Kaspar Hauser, he doesn’t process or understand judgements (self-judgement as well judgement of others), what he does is purely from within.
Producer's note:
The film is based on the Latvian debut novel of the same title. The book was published in December 2020 and became a bestseller in Latvia. The novel currently is published in Armenian, Estonian, German in Austria and Germany in Arabic in Lebanon, in Hungarian, English and in Lithuanian, our current co-production partner. The lead actor is a well-known Latvian actor Ivars Krasts and the supporting roles are played also by well-known actors. We can call the film coming-of-age drama with comic elements. Like a Forrest Gump, Oscar looks at the world with childlike naivety, but at the same time offers unexpected insights, revealing the paradoxical reality of our times. The film presents a very liberal work, clear in its opposition to any kind of discrimination, whether it is against the other, the different, the old, the strange, the uneducated or the poor. Call Me Calendar is written with a unique sense of humor, which is one of the key elements to connect with the viewers.
