Biography

Karlis Arnolds Avots began his acting studies as a free-listener, as he was not accepted as an official student in a puppet actor course of Latvian Academy of Culture because of his height (197 cm). After 2 years of studies Karlis managed to become the first one from the course to sign a contract with a theatre and to start working as a full time actor, thus becoming the youngest theatre professional in Latvia. He continued his studies with Mikhail Gruzdov and Indra Roga, who have raised actors like Kseniya Rappoport.
Currently Karlis is a part of Dailes Theatre main troupe. Daile is the biggest theatre in Latvia. He has received the Best Young Artist reward for his roles as Razumikhin in “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoevsky and V in “Lungs” by D.McMillan. He started his film career by being casted for the leading role in “Lovable”, by Stanislav Tokalov, DOP Oleg Mutu. Soon after he was casted for another leading role - in “January” by Viestur Kairish, DOP Wojciech Staron. “January” was premiered in Tribeca Film Festival (2022) in New York, where it won the international narrative feature competition.
The collaboration with V.Kairish and W.Staron continues also in Karlis’ next film, where he is not only the leading actor, but also the screenwriter. The Film will be about world famous Latvian basketball player Ulyana Semyonova’s early years - her troubles with her unusual height/size for a 13 year old girl.
