Director's note

The Forest Brothers have always interested me. When I discovered that women and children were largely absent from these stories, even though they too hid in the forests, the idea for Stormbird was born.

With Russia’s war against Ukraine and growing instability in Europe, this story of ordinary people resisting occupation feels painfully relevant again.

We experience the resistance through eighteen-year-old Lee. After killing two soldiers in self-defence, she is forced into a world she is completely unprepared for. She has no training or desire for violence – only resilience and a fierce instinct for life.

This puts her at odds with Geronimo, who has lost his family and lives for revenge. He is ready to die fighting; Lee wants to survive. I want us to feel her fear as much as her courage, and understand what survival costs.

The forest is almost another character: a source of shelter, food and healing, but also danger. Hunger, cold, disease and the constant threat of discovery shape daily life. Lee learns to survive by watching others, and we learn with her.

Visually, intimate, restless handheld camerawork will contrast with wide, still landscapes, showing how small these people are against nature and history. Sound grows from the forest itself: wind, trees, sea and distant, unidentified movement.

The music combines ancient Estonian runo song and haunting vocals with subtle electronics – mostly restrained, occasionally raw and euphoric.

The tone is poetic naturalism. I don’t want to romanticise forest life: hunger, cold, sweat, fear and uncertainty are part of it. But so are youth, tenderness, humour and unexpected beauty. At its heart, Stormbird is about the instinct to stay alive when history seems determined to destroy you.

Producer's note

Tormilind (Stormbird) is a premium historical thriller and character-driven limited series set against one of Estonia’s most painful yet underrepresented chapters: the post-WWII Soviet occupation and the armed resistance that followed.

At a time of renewed geopolitical uncertainty in Europe, Tormilind speaks directly to the present, exploring universal questions of resistance, loyalty, family and the moral cost of survival.

By bringing the women of the resistance to the forefront, the series offers a fresh and emotionally complex perspective on a history traditionally told through male heroes.

With its contemporary resonance and cinematic scope, our ambition is to build Tormilind as a high-end European co-production – rooted in Estonia, but designed for international audiences.
