An eccentric Icelandic "sheriff" uses unique wilderness instincts to solve a chilling murder.

Kalmann Óðinsson is the self-proclaimed sheriff of Iceland's northernmost village, a shark hunter in a cowboy hat who sees the world differently from everyone else. When he discovers a pool of blood on the frozen tundra, the disappearance of the town's most powerful man triggers a murder investigation that brings an embattled Reykjavík detective, a ruthless international drug ring and long-buried secrets to Raufarhöfn. As suspicion increasingly falls on Kalmann himself, his extraordinary instincts may be the only thing standing between the truth and a community determined to protect its own.

Producers' note

When we acquired the rights to Kalmann, we recognised its potential to become far more than a traditional Nordic crime series. Beneath its gripping murder mystery lies a deeply human story about identity, belonging and the courage to remain true to yourself in a world that values conformity. These themes are universal and increasingly relevant, giving the series a strong foundation for international audiences.
What makes Kalmann truly distinctive is its protagonist. In a landscape crowded with familiar detectives, Kalmann is refreshingly original. His unique perspective, honesty and unwavering sense of justice allow him to uncover truths others fail to see. Rather than relying solely on suspense, the series is driven by character, emotional authenticity and moments of unexpected warmth and humour.
Based on Joachim B. Schmidt's internationally acclaimed bestselling novel, the adaptation combines a compelling literary foundation with the cinematic ambition of premium television. Iceland's dramatic landscapes and remote coastal communities provide a striking setting while supporting themes of isolation, community and the tension between tradition and change.
As producers, our ambition is to create a series that feels both unmistakably Icelandic and universally accessible. We believe the strongest stories are rooted in a specific place while exploring emotions and conflicts that resonate across cultures.
With an experienced creative team, strong production partners and a clear international strategy, we are developing Kalmann for audiences seeking elevated, character-driven storytelling. We see strong potential for the series to reach audiences across broadcasters, streamers and international platforms while contributing a fresh voice to European drama.
Our goal is simple: to create an unforgettable series led by an unforgettable character – one that will captivate audiences in Iceland and around the world.

Screenwriters' note

Adapting Kalmann for television has never been about simply transferring a bestselling novel to the screen. It has been about preserving what makes Joachim B. Schmidt's story so distinctive while allowing it to grow into a character-driven series with its own rhythm and emotional depth.
What drew me to Kalmann was his perspective on the world. He approaches life with honesty, curiosity and an unwavering moral compass – qualities that often place him at odds with those around him. While others dismiss him as a simpleton, Kalmann consistently notices what everyone else overlooks. That contradiction became the emotional foundation of the adaptation.
The series expands the world of the novel by deepening its relationships, broadening its ensemble and allowing the mystery to unfold across multiple episodes without losing sight of the characters at its heart. Every narrative decision has been guided by one principle: the investigation should never overshadow the humanity of the people caught up in it.
I have always been drawn to stories where humour and tragedy exist side by side. Life rarely fits neatly into one genre, and neither should Kalmann. The series blends suspense with warmth, melancholy and moments of unexpected comedy, creating a tone that feels both authentic and uniquely Icelandic.
Although firmly rooted in Iceland, the story explores universal themes of belonging, identity, prejudice and community. These are questions audiences everywhere recognise, regardless of culture or language.
My ambition is to create a series that surprises audiences not only through its compellingly twisted mystery, but also through its emotional honesty. If viewers finish the series remembering Kalmann more than the crime itself, then I will feel I have remained true to the spirit of the novel while creating something new for television.

Director's note

From the moment I read Joachim B. Schmidt’s novel, I knew I had to bring Kalmann to the screen. What captivated me was the humanity at its heart. Kalmann is a man the world underestimates – a self-proclaimed sheriff in a cowboy hat whom his community views as an eccentric misfit. But his unique intuition and deep connection to nature allow him to see what others miss. His uniqueness is not a weakness; it’s his greatest strength.

This story resonates with me personally. Having experienced what it means to feel like an outsider trying to decode a world whose rules seem obvious to everyone else, I approach Kalmann with deep empathy. I want audiences to discover Raufarhöfn through his eyes, realising that those whom society overlooks often possess the greatest wisdom.

Beneath the murder mystery lies a community struggling with economic decline and the erosion of tradition – a story about belonging, identity and the courage to remain true to yourself.

Visually, the harsh, breathtaking Arctic landscape is a character in its own right. Inspired by the deadpan humanism of Fargo and Aki Kaurismäki, I am shaping a world where dark humour, melancholy and suspense coexist seamlessly. The series embraces a deliberate pace, ensuring every eccentric local is portrayed with emotional truth.

Ultimately, Kalmann is more than a crime drama. It is an unforgettable encounter with a man who proves that the people we dismiss are often the ones most capable of seeing the truth.
