The Visual Language of Children’s Films

Certain visual elements return again and again in children's films, and they are rarely there by chance. This session looks at which of them filmmakers choose, how and how often they appear in the narrative, and why they work. The focus is not on psychological impact or audience data, but on how these films are constructed and why filmmakers build them the way they do. This analytical perspective then meets the market view of a sales agent: which of these visual choices help a children's film stand out, travel across borders and find its audience, and what buyers look for in a film. Where do the two perspectives meet, and where do they pull in different directions?
They may not agree. Research raises the question of whether faster films ask more of a child's attention than they give back. The market may reply that a film nobody buys is a film no child will ever see. Each side has a point, it's up to the audience to judge which is stronger. Bring your objections. Both speakers will need them.
