Social responsibility as a key to successful commissioning
Storytellers hold immense power when it comes to creating positive and lasting social impact. This is especially true for serial storytellers who influence viewers over a long period, thus forming cultural identities. In this Masterclass, scriptwriting Professor Joachim Friedmann shows how series generate sustainable impact on viewers and therefore social discourse. This is not only an important question for socially-minded creators – also producers have to consider these questions since film funding organizations focus on diversity and social responsibility as criteria for funding decisions. However, this is not about manipulation or propaganda, but about helping to ensure that all voices are heard and amplified, including those that have historically been marginalized. Thus, the masterclass also poses the question of which mistakes should be avoided if one wants to convey a differentiated and diverse view of the world through a series of narratives.
