Same Story, Different Medium: A Creative Workshop for Games and Film

Tereza Roller-Sabella
Speaker
A story does not survive the jump from screen to game, or game to screen, untouched. The real question is what you keep, what you let go, and how you get a whole team to agree on it.
This is a working session, not a lecture. We start with what actually changes when a story moves between something you watch and something you play, and why so much gets lost in that gap. Then we get into the vocabulary: lore, mechanics, player agency, a look at level design. These are words game developers use without thinking, tied back to the storytelling you already know from film and television.
And then we work together. Bring a project you are developing, or just come ready to brainstorm. In small groups we take one idea across the screen-to-game line, pull it apart and put it back together.
You leave with a way of talking about your story that the rest of your team can act on.
