Construction has begun in Jõhvi on what will become Estonia’s—and notably the Baltics’—first modern film studio complex, slated to open by August 2026. The €16 million project, financed through the EU’s Just Transition Fund, is spearheaded by the Ida‑Viru Investment Agency and Mapri Ehitus.
The main site will include two purpose-built studios: a 2,000 m² sound‐stage dedicated entirely to production, and a 1,200 m² multifunctional hall designed to accommodate both film shoots and large-scale events like concerts or conferences, with support infrastructure, roads, heating, and utilities already underway.
Despite initial delays tied to complex funding procedures, the project is running slightly ahead of schedule. An unexpected discovery of three metres of sand beneath the surface allowed for a ready-made foundation, easing early construction pressures. On-site planning includes a creative and multimedia incubator building adjacent to the studios, providing space for digital startups and creative firms. Foundation work for this is set to begin in the coming month.
From the outset, the initiative aims to draw international film productions to Jõhvi, tapping into the varied landscapes of Ida‑Viru County that complement studio filming opportunities. Talks are already underway with both local and Hollywood producers, with the first shoots expected as early as September 2026
Looking ahead, a second film studio complex is planned for Tallinn in 2027—not seen as competition but as a joint effort in marketing Estonia as a premier film destination in the region.
