Lithuanian production company Baltic Film Services, together with the British company Sid Gentle Films are currently filming a new six-part television series Honey in Lithuania accordng to Vilnius Film Office.

Set in 1980s East Berlin, the series follows a young British spy navigating political tension, counterintelligence, and complex personal relationships. As production continues in Vilnius, Honey producer Christopher Hall reflects on filming the series in the Lithuanian capital.

Hall is no stranger to Lithuania. Two decades ago, Vilnius was considered as a potential location for the BBC series Archangel, starring Daniel Craig, but was ultimately deemed unsuitable.

“At the time, we needed to recreate the Soviet Union, and Vilnius already felt too European, so we had to film elsewhere,” Hall says.

He has now returned with Honey, a project that will transform Vilnius into 1980s East Berlin.

The series combines elements of comedy, romance, and espionage, with a focus on character-driven storytelling. According to Hall, the relationships between the main characters are central to the narrative.

Lithuania was chosen for its variety of locations, competitive tax incentives, and experienced film crews. The production employed 145 professionals, including 130 Lithuanian crew members.

“Only a small core team came from the UK, along with German costume and art specialists who were familiar with the East Berlin period,” Hall notes. “The majority of the crew is local, and their experience and cohesion were key to the production.”

Filming took place across Vilnius, including the districts of Naujamiestis and Lazdynai, as well as the Vilnius Palace of Culture, Entertainment and Sports. The capital hosted 57 filming days, with an additional 15 days spent in other Lithuanian cities such as Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Palanga. Many interior scenes were filmed in studios.

While Vilnius is a modern city, Hall says suitable locations were found that could convincingly double as Cold War–era East Berlin. The Palace of Culture, Entertainment and Sports was used for multiple settings, including a bridal shop and secret police offices.

Honey is produced by the award-winning team behind Killing Eve, The Durrells, and Extraordinary. The series is scheduled to premiere in 2026 on BBC and ZDF.
