The program of Music Meets Film 2024 is almost ready and will be published soon.
Here are some highlights of the four-day event on 19-22 November 2024 in Tallinn during the Black Nights Film Festival.
Co-production is an opportunity for new funding, business and creative partnerships. It is also something that strengthens a bond between countries. A similar bond has been created between Estonia and Iceland over years of collaboration and during this panel we are focusing ourselves on two films and how music has created these relationships: ‘Driving Mum’ and ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’.
Having remarkable journeys, these two films are great examples of recent co-production wonders between our two countries. For this panel we are joined from the ‘Driving Mum’ team by Hilmar Oddsson (director), Tõnu Kõrvits (composer), Matis Rei (sound designer) and Hendrik Mägar (editor). For ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’ we are joined by Anna Hints (director) and Eðvarð Egilsson (composer). The case studies will be moderated by Marianne Ostrat (producer of both films). We will explore how these co-productions came to be, how music connects us, how these were developed, the accomplishments and what kind of future do we see for similar co-productions.
Panelists:
Hilmar Oddsson, Driving Mum director
Anna Hints, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood director
Tõnu Kõrvits, Driving Mum composer
Matis Rei, Driving Mum sound designer
Hendrik Mägar, Driving Mum editor
Marianne Ostrat, moderator, producer
Starting out a career in film music can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. We live in a time where we can be connected with people and companies all over the world seemingly in a matter of minutes. But where to start, where to go and apply to actually make these ideas of connection into a reality?
For this in collaboration with Tier Music and Orchestral Tools, we are creating a navigation map, where we collect information about music and film festivals, conferences, competitions to attend, agencies and music supervisors to contact, options for fundings etc. This will be your guide to take the next steps in your career and closer to your dreams to make them into a reality. In this workshop, all of this will be presented to give you the navigation tools for finding your way in the music and film industry.

Practicality is an important part of Music Meets Film and therefore we strive to have a creative workshop each year. This time the MMF participants get to work together with a renowned music supervisor in Selektor Studio in Tallinn to create a score according to an example brief. Within this workshop the participants will have an experience of what it’s like to work together with a music supervisor, how to read and create for a brief in a pre-set timeframe.

What to know before going into a contract and giving your signature? What happens after signing the contract new matters come into light that have a clear effect on your work? These matters will be discussed and answered in a dialogue between the attorney-at-law and partner of TGS Baltic Priit Lätt and film composer Liina Sumera.
The format, a one-to-one discussion between a film composer and an attorney-at-law, creates a transparent and trusting environment to raise topics that can be intimidating to do when actually having these types of negotiations. It is a place to gain new perspectives and confidence to know your rights and to ask questions.
Panelists:
Priit Lätt, attorney-at-law and partner at TGS Baltic
Liina Sumera, composer
