Frame Within a Frame

Frame Within A Frame, designed for cinematographers, is a new sub-programme of Discovery Campus, taking place within Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event and the Black Nights Film Festival.

The submissions for 2025 edition are now closed! The participants will be announced in autumn.

Frame within A Frame 2025 programme

In 2025 the programme invites participants to join for an intensive workshop taking place in Tallinn, Estonia, from 18-21 November 2025, as part of the Discovery Campus of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event that is followed by a session at the renowned Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, 23-25 November 2025.

Frame within A Frame 2025 is working closely together with the leading institutions, including Aalto University, the IMAGO Technical Committee (ITC), International Cinema Lighting Society (ICLS), Aalto Studios and Camera Nordic, to bring exceptional expertise and resources to the table.

The masterclass session of the programme goes beyond theoretical discussions, offering invaluable hands-on experience with the latest and most innovative technologies shaping the future of cinematography. Explore and experiment with cutting-edge equipment under the guidance of industry-leading professionals.

The more detailed programme of Frame Within the Frame, including the open sessions, will be announced in autumn.

Previous years

Frame Within a Frame 2024

In 2024, Frame Withing a Frame welcomed acknowledged mentors Roberto Schaefer and Ville Penttilä.

The program included the screenings of the films The Kite Runner and The Eternal Road followed by in-depth case studies after the film. One of the highlights of the program is a panel discussion on "Production designing and Cinematography" with Roberto Schaefer, Ville Penttilä and Marco Bittner Rosser.

CWC WORKSHOP

(Camera, Workflow & Creativity)

FOCUS ON LIGHTING & TEXTURE

The workshop, that place on 14-17 November, aimed to enable cinematographers to understand the importance of mastering the workflow to focus on creativity.

They delveed into the relationship between lighting, filters, lenses, camera settings and colour grading to uncover the role of texture in the audience's perception of the image and drama.

The programme included practical hands-on experience, panel discussions and case study presentations.

The workshop was be led by Philippe Ros, AFC (French Association of Cinematographers) and digital imaging supervisor. Philippe Ros is co-chairman of the technical committee of IMAGO (International Federation of Associations of Cinematographers).

In 2023, ARRI joined forces with Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event to introduce cutting-edge cinematic technologies to Tallinn as part of the Frame Within a Frame cinematography masterclass. Aspiring cinematographers will have the opportunity to gain practical experience using the state-of-the-art ARRI ALEXA 35 camera with ARRI Signature Master Prime lenses, allowing them to explore image and texture through hands-on lighting sessions.
