Funding for German and international film production in NRW has a successful track record, with notable films such as Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie, Maren Ade`s Toni Erdmann, Stephen Daldry’s The Reader, Lars van Trier’s Nymphomaniac, Jim Jamush’s Only Lovers Left Alive, Matthias Glasner’s Dying, Andreas Dresen’s From Hilde, with Love, or Fleur Fortuné’s The Assesment, all being shot in this vibrant region, called North Rhine-Westphalia – either directly on location or in studio. The list also includes works by internationally acclaimed German directors like Wim Wenders, Tom Tykwer, Fatih Akin and Margarethe von Trotta.
The Film- und Medienstiftung NRW has been operating since 1991 as a funding partner for the film culture and industry in North RhineWestphalia and Germany, with a focus on international co-productions. With an average annual funding volume of 35 million Euros, it supports the development, production, and distribution of feature films, documentaries, high-end TV movies and series, as well as games and VR, fostering a thriving innovative environment for filmmakers and creatives.
