European Film Academy Masterclasses aka EFA masterclasses is a new training program in the framework of Creative Gate. Intended for film professionals, art department students and those interested in costume design, production design, make up, hair, visual effects, fashion and much more. For these masterclasses Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event has partnered up with European Film Academy who will help to bring to Tallinn talented and awarded EFA winners. The masterclasses are curated by Graziella Bildesheim.

Masterclass by Ursula Patzak
Ursula Patzak began her career in 1991 as an assistant to costume designer Moidele Bickel for Peter Stein and Chloè Obolensky’s shows at Salzburg Festival. Her love for Italy led her to continue her career there. In 1991 she designed costumes for Thierry Salmon’s Three studies on Demons. An important turning point in her career came in 2001 when she met director Mario Martone, with whom she worked on The 10 Commandments, The Secret Opera produced by Naples Teatro Mercadante, Small Moral Works, A Night in Colono, Carmen and Danton’s Death for Turin Teatro Stabile di Torino.
In 2009 she ventured in the world of costume design for film, working on Noi Credevamo directed by Martone, that earned her the David di Donatello and Ciak d’oro in 2011. She also designed costumes for Acciaio by Stefano Mordini and Un giorno speciale by Francesca Comencini. In 2015, her work for Il Giovane Favoloso directed by Martone was awarded once again the David di Donatello and Ciak d’oro.
In 2018 she worked always with Mario Martone for the film ‘Capri Revolution’ and she won the 3. Davide di Donatello. In 2019 she worked on the film ‘La vita davanti a se’ with Sophia Loren directed by Edoardo Ponti.
As her focus has mainly been historical costumes, Ursula’s masterclass will take a closer look at how to create a period film with authentic costumes.
The intent of the masterclass is to understand how to create a character from reading and interpretation of the script, the dialogue with the director and the other departments, what is really possible do for make-up, special make-up and hair get as close as possible to the digital concept. Physical tests on the actors and the search of reference.
Dalia Colli is born on 23 May 1976 in Livorno (Italia) and graduated Decoration at Academy of Beauty Arts in Florence and after getting her degree she started working in a special make up Laboratory in Rome. In 2018 won the David di Donatello and EFA for Dogman Matteo Garrone‘s movie, in couple with the special make up designer Lorenzo Tamburini.
Daniela Tartari is a hair stylist and known for her work on Dogman (2018), La pazza gioia (2016) and Broken Embraces (2009)
Masterclass by Peter Hjorth
Complex visual effects have become affordable for art films with low budgets. The rapid rise of digital techniques in recent years has led to an increasing involvement of VFX experts in script development and has allowed filmmakers to venture into new areas of cinematic storytelling. Peter gives an insight into his visionary work, examines the paradigm shift in VFX why the better a job as a production VFX supervisor he does, the less time he spends on post-production.
Peter Hjorth is a VFX specialist and long-time employee of Lars von Trier. As a VFX supervisor he has worked on the ground-breaking visual effects for from Dancer in the Dark (2000) till The House That Jack Built (2018). In 2018, he was awarded the European Film Award for Best Visual Effects for Ali Abbasis Un Certain Regard winner Border.
