Black Catwalk, initiated by the Creative Gate programme of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, strives to introduce young Estonian fashion and costume designers to the international film industry’s professionals during the annual audiovisual platform Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event.
Founded in 2017, Black Catwalk has evolved from a showcase of young Estonian costume designers to a training programme introducing its participants to the primary guidelines of working in the film industry in the form of various lectures, masterclasses, and individual mentoring. The topics covered include creative processes, characteristics of creating in a certain era, materials, cuts and techniques. As an important aspect of the programme is sustainability, the methods of producing environmentally friendly costumes are also focused on. The tutors are renowned industry professionals, including European Film Academy Award of Excellence winners.
Five teams will be selected for the programme, each consisting of six members: costume designer, video artist, makeup artist, hair stylist, cinematographer and photographer. While the educational programmes are designed for the whole team and the collections are created collaboratively, the main competition is only held among the costume designers. The competing collection must be an interpretation of a well-known film.
The programme culminates with the Black Catwalk Gala on November 26, where the collections are assessed by a jury. The best costume designer will win an internship in the art department of the next film by Tanel Toom (‘Truth and Justice’, 2018).
