Baltasar Kormákur

Baltasar Kormákur is a producer and director whose work spans theatre, film and television. Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, he graduated as an actor from Iceland’s National Academy of Fine Arts in 1990. He was immediately signed on by the National Theatre of Iceland, where he worked as one of the leading young performing artists until 1997. In 2000, he wrote, directed, acted in and produced the feature film 101 Reykjavik, which became an international hit and earned the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film.

In 2012 he decided to extend the company’s activities and start developing TV projects for the international market as well as non-scripted TV domestically. Subsequently, he founded RVK Studios. The first 10-part crime series Trapped was launched at the beginning of 2016.

Kormákur soon made a name for himself internationally and has directed feature films in the US, including Inhale, an independent film produced by the LA-based 26 Films and Contraband, which took first place at the US box office during its opening weekend. In 2015 Everest, another box office front runner internationally, the opening film of the Venice Film Festival and soon after he made Adrift Everest and Adrift that were co-produced by RVK Studios.
