INDUSTRY@TALLINN & BALTIC EVENT 25.-29.11.2019

Another successful Baltic Event wraps up!

The Baltic Event and Baltic Bridge East by West award ceremony was once again hosted by the City of Tallinn in the Town Hall in the heart of its historic Old Town. The 13th Baltic Event, taking place on November 26-28, brought almost 270 film industry professionals to Tallinn, presented 46 projects in total, and granted six awards, including the first contribution from Russia’s Point of View Film Fund – development support in the amount of 10 000 Euros for the best project in the Baltic Bridge East by West producers’ workshop.

The Best Project award, 5000 Euros worth of post-production services granted by the Estonian Digital Centre for the fourth year, went to Polish project The Wounded Beast, represented by producer Roman Jędrkowiak. The experts who selected the winner remarked that the project translated a bullet-proof crime story to a realistic European filmmaking tradition dealing with human relations and values.

Another traditional prize of the Co-Production Market—the Best Pitch Award by the market’s long-time partner Screen International was given out for the sixth time this year. As a result of the vote by producers, sales agents, distributors and financiers, who had had one-on-one meetings with the projects, Screen’s representative Martin Blaney handed the diploma to Finnish producers from Making Movies Oy – Kaarle Aho and Kai Nordberg, accompanied by directors Jukka Vidgren and Juuso Laanto, who presented their debut feature, comedy Impaled Rektum at the market. A feature article on the project will be published on screendaily.com, and Martin Blaney will continue to monitor the film’s progress throughout its life-cycle.

Estonian company Digital Sputnik, who creates solutions for motion picture and TV lighting with revolutionary LED systems, granted 5400 Euros worth of services for the second time. The award went to Swedish producer Emma K. Dixgård, who presented spy-thriller Killer’s Fee, a project that sheds light on an unknown Cold War story told in the subtle Nordic narrative tradition.

Cannes Marché du film Producers’ Network awarded free accreditation for their 2015 edition to two young and promising producers– one for a Co-Production Market project representative, Czech producer Michal Kráčmer, and the other for a Baltic Bridge East by West participant – Olga Ailarova from Russia.

The Point of View Film Fund, which was founded in 2013 in order to support high-quality co-productions with potential for theatrical distribution in Russia, awarded 10 000 Euros of development support to project Sulaiman Mountain, represented in Tallinn by producer Maria Yakubova and director Elizaveta Stishova.

During its 13 years of operation, Baltic Event has become the biggest and most important film market in Northern and Central Europe. It has highlighted both young promising talents as well as established professionals. In previous editions, such renowned European filmmakers as Cristian Mungiu, Sergei Loznitsa, Levan Koguashvili, Adam Csaszi, Aku Louhimies, Klaus Häro, Petri Kotwica, Veiko Õunpuu and others have presented their projects that have gone on to competition sections in Cannes and Berlin. It has also helped many Baltic films to make it to festivals and international theatrical distribution deals.

Baltic Event’s partners are EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs), Cannes Marché du Film’s Producers’ Network, Moscow Business Square, Finnish Film Foundation, Estonian Digital Centre, TorinoFilmLab, Digital Sputnik, CTB Film Company, RFilms, Point of View Film Fund, Black Nights Film Festival, Screen International and Film New Europe.

Baltic Event is organized by NPO BE. The event is supported by Creative Europe MEDIA Programme, Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Estonian Film Institute, National Film Centre of Latvia, Lithuanian Film Center, Tallinn City Enterprise Department, Estonian Film Industry Cluster and Enterprise Estonia/European Regional Funds, and Nordic Hotel Forum.
